The exotic spectacle of the San Pedro Prison

Looking through the amateur tourist photography rounded up at Prison Photography of San Pedro I can't help thinking what a race/class spectacle the prison had become, not all that different than most tourism I guess.

Yes, it was exoticism/exploitation of the first order. That said, while I was living in La Paz I considered going there. It would've been interesting to try to talk to Fernandez--although I'm sure much tougher to get into the rich areas of prisons.
I believe "Marching Powder," the book that really started the San Pedro tourism industry, is being made into a film with Don Cheadle.
